An impressive 90% of the solar panels’ cost will be financed by the government, leaving a modest 10% to the beneficiaries. This five-year payment arrangement comes with a nominal interest rate, providing financial comfort, especially during the colder months.

In line with the government’s guidelines, individuals implicated in electricity theft, possessing multiple meters, or operating with faulty or tampered meters will be disqualified from the scheme. Additionally, those who have a history of non-payment of their electricity bills will not be considered eligible.

The scheme also stipulates that consumers with a record of defaulting on payments and those with malfunctioning meters will be precluded from taking advantage of the program. This ensures that the benefits of the scheme are extended to compliant and law-abiding consumers.

In a progressive move earlier this month, the Punjab cabinet gave the green light to the “Roshan Gharana” initiative. Under this program, households consuming up to 200 units of electricity are eligible for complimentary solar panels. For those using between 201 and 500 units, the scheme offers solar panels at a nominal 10% cost, with the Punjab government subsidizing the remaining 90%.

Furthermore, an interest-free loan arrangement is available for these power consumers, spread over a manageable five-year instalment plan. This strategic step not only promotes sustainable energy but also provides significant financial relief to the residents of Punjab.

Prospective participants can ascertain their qualification for the scheme by texting their electricity bill reference number along with their computerized ID card number to the designated number, 8800. Following the PITB’s lottery selection process, individuals who are chosen will receive a confirmation via SMS. Subsequently, the local district authorities and the respective Distribution Companies (DISCOs) will carry out a verification process for these selected applicants to ensure the integrity of the scheme.

To enhance the security and traceability of solar panels and systems, each unit will be equipped with unique barcodes and QR codes. This measure is designed to deter unauthorized sales in the open market. In an initial rollout, a lottery system will be implemented to distribute solar panels to over 100,000 consumers, ensuring a fair and transparent allocation process.
